Orthodox Spirituality in Practice (50%), online (2023-2024)

Overview

This course is aimed at providing basic theoretical and practical instruction on the day-to-day Orthodox spiritual life for the laity. The course is designed to be inclusive so that a lay member of the church from any social or educational background can participate. The course also is designed to be understood and followed by people of all ages and knowledge levels. The course focuses on how an Orthodox Christian can lead his/her life in in accordance with Christian ethics, fulfil the basic expectations of a Christian spirituality and have a good relationship with God, fellow Christians and the wider community. The course will be given for one year, (two semesters), and explores how an Orthodox Christian should lead a life of prayer, fasting, confession and participation in the holy sacraments. It also gives guidance on how one can read and reflect on holy scriptures (the Holy Bible and the Life of Saints) and use them for daily practical self-instruction.

 

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

1.Identify and articulate the meaning and basic concepts of Orthodox spirituality

2.Understand how to pray, read the scriptures and reflect on them

3.Discuss different aspects of Orthodox spirituality

4.Identify what is expected from an Orthodox Christian in their day-to-day spiritual and social life

5.Instruct family members on the basics of Orthodox spiritual and practical life

Requirements:

In addition to the requirements stated in the course description, all students need to be at least 18 year old, be officially registered in Sweden and have a sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction.

Fees: Tuition at Sankt Ignatios Folkhögskola is free for everyone who is registered (“folkbokförda”) in Sweden.

Service Fees at Sankt Ignatios Folkhögskola: Students are required to pay a service fee. The service fee for this course is SEK 400 per semester.
