Overview
This course is aimed at providing basic theoretical and practical instruction on the day-to-day Orthodox spiritual life for the laity. The course is designed to inclusively address all the lay members of the church from varying social and educational backgrounds. The course also is intended to be generic so that it can be understood and followed by different age groups and knowledge levels. The course focuses on how an Orthodox Christian can lead his/her life in Christian ethic fulfilling the basic expected spirituality to have good relationship with God, fellow Christians and the wider community. The course will be given for one year, two semesters, and details how an Orthodox Christian should lead a life of prayer, fasting, confession and partaking in the holy sacraments. It also gives guidance on how one can read and reflect on holy scriptures (the Holy Bible and the Life of Saints) and use them for daily practical self-instruction.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and articulate the meaning and basic concepts of Orthodox spirituality
- Understand how to pray, read scriptures and reflect on them
- Discuss different aspects of Orthodox spirituality
- Identify what is expected from an Orthodox Christian in their day-to-day spiritual and social life
- Instruct family members on the basics of Orthodox spiritual and practical life
Other requirements:
Attendance is mandatory, which requires the presence of at least on the level of 80% of the teaching.
