Mahlietay (Cantor’s) Training Program in the Tewahedo Tradition

Overview

The Cantor’s training program is designed for devoted participants who wish to study the chants and hymns composed and arranged by Saint Yared. The course lasts for a period of 4-6 years. The languages of instruction and interaction on this course are Tigrinya, Amharic and Ge’ez and this module does not require proficiency in Swedish or English. However participants study this course in combination with Allmänkurs where Swedish and English will be used.

The chants and hymns in the cantor program require an extended period of study and enculturation. This is true especially for those who have no prior knowledge of the chants and hymns and for this reason a substantial amount of time has been allocated to study of the chants. Participants will also learn hymnal instruments such as prayer sticks, drums, and the sistra, as well as studying advanced Ge’ez and eight other theological training modules including Dogmatic Theology, Church History I, Bible Study, Patrology, (Year 1) Church History II, Canon Law and Church Administration, Ecclesiology, and Homiletics (Year 2).

In order to enroll in this program participants must have successfully completed the diaconal training program in the Tewahedo tradition or equivalent liturgical and hymnal studies.
